Basics SAP ERP Knowledge

Enterprise Services Architecture (ESA)

ESA = SOA + business context. So when we are talking about ESA adoption, it means SOA plus business process oriented view of technology. ESA, itself is not a technology layer. It is a business focused approach to a services-oriented enterprise architecture adoption. So while all the patterns of SOA apply, ESA will talk about how to align business and IT. It will talk about IT governance models, for that matter. It will talk about how organizations need to realign for transforming into an agile enterprise. The ESA composer (can be compared to ASAP roadmap content) has a lot of content for organizations on ESA adoption phases.

SAP Business Suite

  • SAP ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning)
  • SAP CRM (Customer Relationship Management)
  • SAP PLM (Product Lifecycle Management)
  • SAP SRM (Supply Relationship Management)
  • SAP SCM (Supply Chain Management)
Master Data Master

Master data are data which is used long term in the SAP system for several business processes and ensures NO redundancy of data in the system.  Master data has an organizational aspect as the information is organized into VIEWS which are assigned to organizational elements. e.g.: Customer master = 3 views:

  • (Client): General data
  • (Company code): Financial Accounting data
  • (Sales Area): Sales data
Transactions are application programs which execute business processes in the SAP system such as creating a customer order; posting an incoming payment, etc.

Document is a data record that is generated when a transaction is carried out. Every transaction creates a document which contains all relevant predefined information from the master data and
organizational elements assigned.

OLTP

OLTP(Online transaction Processing) database contains detailed transaction data. Such database may contain some derived data, which is calculated from the basic data elements, e.g. the primary element can be the item price while the derive data can be the item's average price over a period of time.

The data in OLTP database is structured and organised so it favours speed, performance, reliability, data integrity and security.

Company Code

Represents an independent accounting unit.  Balance sheet and P/L statements, required by law are created at this level.

SAP Web Application Server

SAP Web Application Server is a component of the solution which works as a web application server to SAP solutions. From the SAP point of view the Web AS is the foundation on which most of their product range runs.

With the SAP Web Application Server you can implement both server-based and client-based Web applications. Server applications (for example, online shops or portals) can be created in the integrated development environment or in an external tool. These applications can contain Web pages as well as static HTML code and dynamic script code.

The SAP Web Application Server can execute – depending on your chosen installation option – ABAP and/or Java programs. This means you can use the ABAP-based Business Server Pages and a Java technology (JSP, etc.) to create Web applications.
