Many people find it difficult to re-enter the work force after an extended period of time without work.  There could be many reasons when that happened.  The common reason is that you could have been layoff by the company as they were conducting a worldwide retrenchment.  At that time, you were unable to find another job as the economy was bad.  For others, it could be that they stop work as there are no one in the family to look after the children. 

Whatever the reasons could be, after that long period of time without a full time job, it can be rather frightening to restart your job hunting again.  No matter how intimidating it may sound, try to stay positive and do what you must do to start that job hunt again.

Don't worry about that job gap in your resume.  Today, employers are more receptive towards a job gap on a resume as they know that job layoff are very common.  It can happened to anyone, anywhere at anytime.  Employees staying with a company till their retirement are very rare species.  You hardly find them anymore. 

However, one thing continue to be important to the employer when they are recruiting any new employees.  That is, how do you remain relevant during that period of unemployment? 

Therefore, during that period of unemployment, as long as you can convince them that you have the initiative to keep your job knowledge relevant, you shouldn't have any problems landing that job you are seeking.

You could keep you job skill relevant by paying and taking courses on your own.  Subscribe to a trade magazine that are relevant to your job.  Also, today with something called the internet, you can easily find a forum that is related to your career and keep up to date by visiting the forum regularly.

When you can't find a full time job, that doesn't stop you from seeking for a part time or voluntary job instead.  There are many cases where people managed to get leads for a full time job from their part time or voluntary work.  Furthermore, part time work is a great way to earn some extra cash while you continue to seek out your full time job.

One last area you should explore is a computer home job on the internet.  The internet have plenty of job opportunities which you can work from home with only a computer and internet connection.

Don't be mis-lead into thinking that you need to be IT savvy in order to start a computer home job.  Learning how to used the html software is as simple as learning how to used Microsoft Word.  As long as you have some job knowledge from your current career or some hobby, you can start a website about it. Starting a website related to your job not only allowed you to stay relevant.  With a website, you can then sell ads or stuff on it and many people around the world have successfully built a second source of full time income from it.
