Are you one those perfectionist? Do have find trouble finishing things that you have started, because you just can't produce a perfect service or product? Have you ever decided not to do something, because there is no time to do it `right'? What if someone who evaluate you is not impressed with your project, does that mean that you shouldn't have bothered with it? What if your best really is, just good enough? There is no doubt about it, we are our own worst life enemy. Some of us see microscopic errors in our work, whether that is cleaning a mirror, writing a term paper or closing the deal of a life time at work. The blue tie isn't quite the same color as your jacket, so you change your clothes. It all makes sense to you. After all why would you leave the house without putting your best foot forward? Chances are, no one is paying enough attention to you, to pick up on your minor flaws. Think of the things you never did, that may have benefited many, simply because you didn't think you could do it quite good enough. Imagine where you might be if you had taken the risk of presenting something that was not flawless, but very good. Every day we evaluate ourselves and by the time we're done, there's not much left in our self esteem. Because of that, we tend to live a rather mediocre life as opposed to an energy packed vivacious one. We never give the oil painting away that we did especially for our friend. because something wasn't `quite right.' Someone once said "if I had to do it all over again...I would have had parties, even though my sofa was faded." Seeing the importance of what is in our lives, as opposed to critiquing the things that we think we should be able to do perfect, can change the way we feel about ourselves. If you are a perfectionist, try letting a few things `go.' Don't look at others' work with a negative mind. Try not to compare yourself to someone whose work you envy. Rather just let things be as they are. Give each day your best shot, and know that it is exactly as it is supposed to be. You may be surprised who is not watching or talking about you. At a time when people are learning about the ego, and the importance of shifting it out of their lives, consider that perfectionism is the mightiest of egos at work. Learn to enjoy the job that you do, instead of worrying about the job that you would have finished, if you could have figured out a way to do it better.
