Answers:

  1) 1 pants = $8
      6 belts = 3 pairs of pants
      8 x 3 = 24
       24 / 6 = 4
      Cost of a belt = $4

  2)  Total 17 and 44 legs.
Assumption method, start at around half the number.
       Birds          Cats
        10                7        = 20 (10 x 2) + 28 (7 x 4)  = 48 legs
        11                6        = 22 (11 x 2) + 24 (6 x 4)  = 46 legs
        12                5        = 24 (12 x 2) + 20 (5 x 4)  = 44 legs
       There are 12 birds.

  3) a) Total number of people - Adults
           7584 - 2839 = 4745
      There wer 4745 children there.

      b) 4745 - 2566 = 2179
      There were 2179 girls there.

  4) 7 x 4 = 28
      20 + 20 = 40
      40 - 28  = 12
      She will recieved $12 change.

  5) Total erasers - 3 erasers left
      48 - 3 = 45
      Each child received 9 erasers.
      45 / 9 = 5
      There were 5 children there.
