How To Register Do Not Call Registry in Singapore

Introduction

We paid monthly for our phone not to get text message and telephone calls from telemarketers advertising various products and services, especially when I'm busy at work or still sleeping at home.

This was the main reason why many Singaporean sign up with the Singapore Do Not Call (DNC) Registry when it was officially launched in December 2013.

The registry was a welcome call by many Singaporean as part of the Singapore's Personal Data Protection Act which promises an end to such annoying telemarketing disturbances for people who register their telephone numbers with it.

Registration

It took me less than 3 minutes to end the irritating text messages and phone calls from those annoying telemarketers who mass blasts their text ads to us in order to earn money.

Visit the Do No Call Registration site:

https://www.dnc.gov.sg

You can register Online, via SMS or by Phone.

Options

You may register your number with one or more of the following 3 Registers:

  • No Voice Call (to opt out of receiving telemarketing calls)
  • No Text Message (to opt out of receiving telemarketing text messages, such as SMS or MMS)
  • No Fax Message (to opt out of receiving telemarketing fax messages or if your telephone number is not a fax number)
Steps

Step 1: Please enter your telephone number and select an action in the drop down list.

Step 2: You will receive a One Time Password (OTP) through the following methods:

  • SMS to your mobile phone - if your number begins with “8” or “9”.
  • Call to your fixed line phone – if your number begins with “3” or “6”. The OTP will be read out to you.
  • Fax to your machine - If you are registering a fax number, please tick the “This is a fax machine” checkbox. The OTP will be faxed to you.
Step 3: Please enter the OTP sent to you to proceed with your registration.

Complaint

If you suspect that an organisation has breached the DNC provisions, you may wish to directly contact the organisation sending you the telemarketing message and request that they stop doing so.

You may also wish to lodge a complaint with the PDPC:

News

I believe that you have read the news that Star Zest Home Tuition has face charges for breaching Do Not Call Registry rules.  It is the first company in Singapore to breach the Do Not Call Registry (DNC) requirements under the PDPA.

They are said to have done this without applying to the Personal Data Protection Commission to confirm whether the Singapore telephone numbers were listed in the Do Not Call (DNC) Registry. They are also accused of sending the messages before getting confirmation within the prescribed duration that the numbers were not listed.

Conclusion

After registration, the result was positive.  Now I received almost ZERO text messages or calls from those telemarketers who mis-used our mobile numbers like nobody business.

A big thank to the emergement of the Personal Data Proctection Commission.
